Fried Apple Pies
Ingredients:
For the Crust:
- 3 cups Flour
- 1 cup Crisco
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 1/2 cup Ice Water
For the Filling:
- Your favorite canned apple pie filling OR
- Homemade filling made from dried apples (see instructions below)
Instructions:

- In a mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of flour and 1 teaspoon of salt.
- Add 1 cup of Crisco to the flour mixture.
- Use a pastry blender to cut the shortening into the flour/salt blend until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add 1/2 cup of ice water and mix it into the flour mixture using a fork until it's well combined.
- Once mixed, cover the dough and refrigerate it for one hour.
- After refrigeration, roll out the dough in small batches on a lightly floured surface.
- Use a tea cup saucer to make your pie circles.
- Brush the edges of the circles with beaten egg.
- Fold the circles in half, creating a half-moon shape, and use a sharp knife to trim away any excess dough.
- Seal the edges of the pies by pressing them with a fork.
For the Filling:
- Option 1 (Canned Filling): Use your favorite canned apple pie filling.
- Option 2 (Homemade Filling from Dried Apples):
- If using dried apples, rehydrate them according to package instructions.
- Mash the rehydrated apples to your preferred level of chunkiness.
- Add brown sugar and cinnamon to taste, adjusting for your desired level of sweetness and spice.
Assembly and Frying:
- Spoon a portion of your chosen apple filling onto one half of each pie circle.
- Fold the other half of the circle over the filling, creating a half-moon shape.
- Press the edges with a fork to seal the pies.
- Place the assembled pies on parchment paper.
- Warm up the oil in a frying pan on medium heat.
- Cook the pies until they achieve a delightful golden brown color on both sides.
- Take them out of the oil and let them drain on paper towels.
- Allow them to cool slightly before serving.
