Chocolate cake

  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups of granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 and a half teaspoons of baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1/2 cup of vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 1 cup of hot water

For the Frosting:

  • 1 cup of softened unsalted butter
  • 3 and a half cups of powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 and a half cups of milk
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • a pinch of salt


  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by greasing and flouring them.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  4. Combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients, mixing thoroughly.
  5. Slowly pour the hot water into the batter, stirring until well combined.
  6. Divide the batter equally between the prepared cake pans and bake for 35 minutes.
  7. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. To make the frosting, use an electric mixer to beat the softened butter until smooth. Gradually add the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, milk, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt, and mix until smooth and well combined.
  9. Once the cakes are completely cooled, generously frost the cake with the prepared frosting.
